Based on the responses we have gained from our target audience, we will plan our ancillary tasks accordingly. We will ensure to take their views into account when creating our own ancillary tasks.

Branding and Synergy

Taylor Swift - Reputation by Daniella McHugh

Additional target audience research

I conducted additional target audience target audience research in order to assist us whilst producing our music video. I asked them questions on the artists persona and if they understood and enjoyed the narrative we had in mind.

Behind the scenes / Test shoot

Lip Sync Casting

After carrying out the lip sync casting we decided to go for Sonia as the only person lip syncing, this is because she already knows the required lyrics making filming easier and appears the most confident as well as has the necessary amount of emotion. We did not choose a male to lip sync as we wanted to focus on our artist and not the male voice that is going to appear as featuring on the song as not to confuse the audience making it clear who the main artist is.

Casting

We decided to cast Sonia and Sarthak as they looked the most natural whilst doing the expressions. They were able to adapt to the different variations of facial expressions which was exactly what we needed. They were also both available on both the planned shoot days which was very convenient.

Branding and Synergy

To understand the importance of branding and synergy I researched into how it is effective when portrayed to the audience. I looked at Miley Cyrus's 'Younger Now' album as an example.

Target Audience Profile - Day In The Life

To understand our target audience better we decided to make a day in the life video following the day to day activities that a female between the ages of 15 - 23 would follow.

Additional Research - Editor

  • Here I edited a narrative remake for the song 'Let Her Go' by Passenger. This is a combination of the original video and clips from the film 'Dear John'.
  • This allowed me to understand the features of a performance and narrative music video as well as help whilst practicing my editing.
  • I chose these clips based on the lyrics within the song in order for them to match up appropriately.
  • The use of the black and white aided in making the clip seem like a flashback memory.

Additional Research - Editor

As editor, my job was to look at interesting special effects that could be used in the making of our own music video. One idea that I had was to make our music video black and white with only certain aspects in colour therefore I researched deeply and found this tutorial. This was very helpful as it enabled me to go through the process step by step. This will be useful when producing our music video as I will be able do this to enhance our video.

Below is a screen recording of how I practiced using this technique to possibly implement in the making of our music video. Here I desaturated the background to foreground the flower.

Album Poster Remake

On the left is the original Ariana Grande album poster and on the right is the version that I recreated on Photoshop. Recreating this poster helped me understand the blocking of the images and text as well as the basics of producing a poster based on conventions. This will help when creating my own ancillary album poster as I am know knowledgable on these aspects. They both look pretty similar however some differences include the boldness of the text in the black rectangle at the bottom and also the spacing between the words.

Original video vs Our idea

Here we compared the original music video for Running by Beyonce, Naughty boy and Arrow Benjamin, with our music video idea to show how it differs in terms of narrative and micro-elements but also how it may be similar to create certain moods and atmospheres.

Song short-list

As a group, we collectively decided to shortlist our songs based on which one we thought would be the most relevant to society today as well as which one we thought was the most feasible. We listened to all the songs and thought of ideas for all. Following this, we chose a song that best suited what we had envisioned. In the end, we came to the conclusion of choosing the pop genre as it was the most popular music genre to the younger demographic hence why we chose Running by Beyonce, Naughty Boy, Arrow Benjamin.

I compared mainstream music videos and independent music videos to allow me to understand the difference between them. This will help me understand how each differ and which category our music video will fall under.

Song Pitch

This is my song pitch for songs that I think would be the best to make a music video for. This presentation justifies why I think the song would be good and feasible to produce as well as potential ideas.

Target Audience Research

We gathered a couple of our target audience members, between the ages of 15 - 23, and asked the relevant questions on their expectations within a music video, what they think makes one significant and enjoyable to watch and why they like particular artists. We also questioned them on some of the ancillary tasks that we could potentially be producing such as digipaks and websites.

Music Video thorough analysis

I conducted research into one specific music video and analysed it in terms of the micro-elements: mise-en-scene, camerawork, editing and sound and how they shaped the narrative and video itself.

Pop Music Video Analysis

Created using Visme. Free Online Presentation Software.

Director - Hype Williams

I researched into the director Hype Williams as he is very distinguished in the making of music videos. He also works on music videos within the pop genre which gave me an insight on what I should focus on when creating our own music video.

Music Video Compilation - Daniella

Reasons
Haim - Want You Back
This video is one of my favourite 5 music videos as I like the simplicity and the playfulness of the artists and the relaxed way that they are shown through the everyday setting and costume. The lack of variation of shots adds to continuity and their motions.
The Killers - Runaways
I like the way that colours and lighting are used to follow the music and the rhythm of the song and the transition between shots come across as very smooth. The differences in colours seen and lighting used also makes it more interesting.
Raleigh Ritchie - Stronger than Ever
The editing is my favourite aspect of this video, the way the artist is more in motion than everyone else is quite interesting to watch.
Taylor Swift - Style
The use of broken mirrors/glass and projection are well put together in this video and looks very aesthetically pleasing. The lip sync is also quite unique.
Jessie J - Not my Ex
I like this video as it  seems very simple but this allows the lip sync to be more emotionally connected to the audience and has more direct address, this gives more focus to the lyrics and her more spontaneous actions. The black and white is also nice.

Music Video Compilation - Sneha

Here is a compilation of five of my favourite music videos along with a description of why I like them. Here I refer to the narrative styles of the music videos as well as the concepts used.

Carol Vernallis Theory

Carol Vernallis's Music Video Theory allowed me to understand the significance of particular elements and concepts and how they shape a music video. It also helped me think about certain shot types and editing techniques that could be used in the making of my own music video.

Star Persona Research

Here I have created four star persona profiles for different artists within the pop genre; Ed Sheeran, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj and Twenty One Pilots. These will make me knowledgeable about the different aspects of artist persona and their significance. This will also further assist us when creating our own artists star persona and their representations as well as helping when deciding what to include in our music video in terms of the micro elements - mise-en-scene, camerawork, editing and sound.

Artist Case Study - Beyonce

Here I created an artist case study on the Pop singer Beyonce. Creating this allowed me to understand a renowned pop artists character and their representation in more detail. This will assist us when casting for our music video as we have to look at the conventional aspects that are required.

Record Label Research

I researched the 'BIG THREE' record label (since 2012) to give me a better idea of what to expect and give as a record label. This gave an insight on the type of artists each have signed; they are all well known, renowned artists. This is because they are with large conglomerates that invest a lot more money into them.

Record Company Name and Logo - Daniella

These are the three logo ideas that I came up with for our chosen name Repertory Records. I considered the two Rs in our name to be something worth using as the focus of the logo. I used this for the first two ideas and included aspects of music such as headphones and music notes. The third logo actually displayed more of the name and a musical element through the use of the record.
