Week 26
I answered questions three and four of the evaluation and this brought my coursework to a close. I was able to look back over everything I had done and why I done it.
Week 25
I completed my ancillaries having addressed all the issues and gathered some last feedback from people that had seen it before so they could give feedback based on comparison and some new people as well. The final cut had been edited by Sneha based on all the feedback we received from the target audience and that we suggested ourselves. I also answered both questions one and two of my evaluation.
Week 24
In this week I was still completing my final drafts for the ancillaries. All the feedback gained since the initial drafts was in mind and I continued to address slight issues of copy clarity and it being expressive of the brand. I further started to plan out my evaluation questions.
Week 23
During this week I made album poster draft 3 and digipak draft 5. Recieving feedback from my teacher and others in my class was very specific and allowed me to visualise what I needed to do. With the feedback of my target audience, members of the class and my teacher I was able to start making my final drafts.
Week 22
Finding that I was struggling with making the link between digipak and album poster I created an experimental draft of the album poster so that I could understand the extent and limits to the main aspects of our brand. This allowed me to understand the kind of visual I wanted to show. I made the next drafts and saw feedback as guidance.
Week 21
Utilising the feedback I received from the target audience I made further changes to my ancillary tasks and completed my next drafts. I then asked my target audience directive questions with focus on clarity, colour scheme and imagery to gain more effective feedback.
Week 20
In this week I justified typography choices that I was using in my ancillaries and I completed the second draft of my digipak and the first draft of my album poster. Once I had gathered feedback on them both I began improving them and
Week 19
This week we conducted the ancillary research summary which gathered together all the research we made and aided our visualisation further. I finished drawing my rough drafts, got feedback and began to draw a second draft of the digipak as that required more changes and I felt I needed the further visual. Then I went on to make my first digital drafts for my digipak once I had completed it on photoshop I got feedback from the target audience and began to make changes.
Week 18
During this week based on the rough cut feedback and our group suggestions the transition cut was made, the transition cut was altered further and the second version was shown to the target audience for feedback. Our brand was secured this week and I uploaded a post that explained our reasoning for going with flowers and the twitch effect. This week I started to draw the rough drafts for my ancillary products and I uploaded completed star persona work that was directly related to our artists image in terms of make up and costume.
Week 17
As we began to move on with ancillary tasks I finished researching the functions of all three ancillaries and this further helped me understand the conventions of each ancillary. Knowing this I chose the two ancillary tasks that I would be making. We conducted rough cut feedback and also created the track list that would be on our digipaks. Also for certain running shots that needed to still be done Sneha and I practised using the slider.
Week 16
This week shoot day happened, we filmed the footage necessary by effectively following the shot list and production schedule. Having them made during planning made filming easier. As a group we conduced a shot scrutiny focusing on what could be kept and what needed to be filmed again in order to make our music video look as good as possible.
Week 15
Within this week I made a risk assessment so that we can know what risks we need to avoid so that no harm comes to anyone on shoot day. The location scouting and recce done collectively allowed us to narrow down to three locations and the effectiveness of each. The ancillary primary research we conducted allowed us to fully understand the ancillary products and what we needed include conventionally and preferably.
Week 14
In this week I carried out research into how branding and synergy is portrayed in the pop genre and this helped in knowing what we needed to have span across our video and our ancillaries in order for the audience to establish a connection. This further aided my research into star persona and I was able to narrow my research down to costume and make up for our artist. The casting of our actors and our artist was essential to us creating the right feel and appearance for the video and had the necessary level of emotion that they could convey when acting. The test shoot helped us know what worked and what didn't which let us know what to include and what can be changed.
Week 13
Collectively we researched the purpose of a music video and by doing this we highlighted what each type of video was and their purpose by themselves or combined. By doing this we could decide the type of video best suited for genre and video. The star persona was again brought up as a matter of importance so I researched further into that. I also thought about the kind of costume, props and make up that would be present in our video and what message they convey.
Week 12
During this week I created a shot list based on the song breakdown so that we had it to follow on shoot day, this helped visualise exactly what footage we needed , I also created a mood board to enhance this visual and express initial ideas. I also began looking into the star persona of our artist and how we should convey this to suit this genre and make our artist more appealing to the audience.
Week 11
During this week as a group we carried out summary of analysis and research summary tasks. This allowed us to conclude our research and gather everything that we had learned in order to effectively move on planning. We had now grasped the conventions and could apply these to our production in order to make our work recognisable as a pop music video.
Week 10
In this week I researched into the difference between mainstream in terms of video, qualities and audience. Our genre having a mainstream audience meant that we needed to consider these aspects in order to be appealing to them. Further conducted research into the album poster and the digipak in order to make sense of their conventions for later on when I created my own. We also identified the clear differences between the original video and ours to make sure our idea differentiated enough.
Week 9
Research into a target audience helped us visualise what they want as our audience as we received suggestions on things like costume and shot types for the main production as well as the ancillaries. Having this kind of information was key as we some idea of what aspects of what they wanted we could use. This week we pitched our ideas for songs and this gave me an insight into the varieties of ideas that can come from one song and we further shortlisted the song Running by Naughty Boy featuring Beyonce and Arrow Benjamin.
Week 8
Once we decided on using the pop genre I researched into two pop music videos to have a better understanding of what would specifically go into the pop genre and what can be considered conventional to the genre in terms of shots, types of narratives and star persona. I looked into what makes a video successful and how that can be applied in terms of target audience and genre.
Week 7
Analysing previous student work, a music videos and a director of music videos this week secured my understanding of the conventions and showed that different directors can express different styles within music videos they create but can still have typicality. The analysis of an existing music video showed the key aspects of MECS such as close ups of the artists face bettered my understanding of specific micro elements. Also critiquing as previous students work highlighted the do's and don'ts.
Week 6
Within this week I conducted research into Andrew Goodwin, a theorist who focuses on aspects of music videos. Carrying out this research made what was needed to be in our music video and what can vary depending on genre and type of music video. I also made a compilation of 5 music videos that I liked and this made me understand the conventions that span across all music videos and what differs as well as showed me what can be done to make a video appealing.
Week 5
In this week I made a case study of Miley Cyrus to understand how artists style and brand and shift overtime. I also carried out star persona research of five artists to grasp an understanding of how important star persona is to an artists image. This helped me understand how to apply it to our artist and what kind of person would be suited to the kind of brand we aimed to create.
Week 4
During this week we researched into the type of names that could be expected of record labels and how they differ per genre. I further researched the big three labels and some others that have an impact in different genres. We came up with a few names and logos. A small focus group was made and we asked about what names they liked, the chosen name Repertory Records was most preferred as it directly related to music and was memorable because of the alliteration.
Week 3
This week I finished editing both the initial remake and the narrative version. I learnt the difficulty of lip syncing and how to make a narrative make sense when matching the visual to the lyrics on Adobe premiere pro. I also learnt when aspects of performance are necessary and that a combination of performance and narrative is common in music videos. Further I became familiarised with using the editing software and I analysed the preliminary work created. This week we also branched off into our groups in which we would be making the final music video production.
Week 2
Within in this week I began to edit the footage from the remake of Jealous, this made me realise how time consuming editing is and how much work goes into it. Further in this week I began to film the narrative version of the remake. Prior to the filming required better understanding of the lyrics and what narrative can be derived from it. Following the lyrics directly was away of displaying a clear narrative. This taught me that a variety of shot types is more effective and how different narratives can be applied to the same video.
Week 1
In this week we created the preliminary tasks which was remaking the music video Jealous by Labrinth which was decided collectively as a class. A shot list was made prior to the filming and made filming easier. This set me up for what was to come when creating our separate videos as we had to have aspects of research and planning done to understand how to make the remake. I learned the effectiveness of good communication and how important it was for everyone to stick to their roles in order for everything to run smoothly and the importance of prior understanding.
